Cross Country: Cajuns Take First, Second At McNeese Cowboy Stampede

Comments

LAKE CHARLES Courtney Musgrove's third-place overall finish paced five runners to a top-10 finish and the overall team title on the women's side while Beau Robinson's third-place finish highlighted the men's team to a second-place finish as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns cross country team competed on Saturday at the 10th annual ASICS McNeese Cowboy Stampede at Chennault Airpark.

Louisiana claimed top honors in the women's 5-kilometer event, scoring 28 points and finishing past host McNeese State (40). Grambling (100) was third in the eight-team race followed by Southeastern Louisiana (124), Texas Southern (124), Loyola (148), Nicholls State (175) and Southern (176).

"We took some steps forward today," head coach Lon Badeaux said. "All of the kids ran good races on a hard and long course, and having Matt (Rice) and Ashley (Irwin) run was refreshing to see what we are getting closer to being ready for the (Sun Belt) conference meet in a month.

"I'm really proud of the grouping the girls we had near the front of the race to give us the victory."

Musgrove crossed the finish line in 18:26.10 to lead Louisiana with Anna Devitt (18:35.30) finishing fourth, Claire Hodges (18:38.00) fifth, Kelci Lyons (18:56.10) seventh and freshman Hailey Hesterman (19:24.10) 10th.

Danielle Castaldi (19:32.50) was 11th for the Ragin' Cajuns with Lindsay LeGarde (19:35.00) 12th, Ashley Irwin (19:51.90) 14th, Kaylei Esfeller (20:07.00) 15th, Courtney Broussard (20:21.00) 17th and freshman Julianna Brooks (21:00.30) 23rd.

Robinson completed the four-mile race with a time of 20:27.10 to finish third overall in the race. Sean Bezdek (20:58.60) was 10th for the Ragin' Cajuns with Bryce Robinson (21:12.70) finishing 11th, Jacob Chicola (21:25.60) 12th, Trey Bonin (21:29.40) 13th, Dylan Heck (21:39.70) 14th, Corbett Ourso (21:40.80) 15th, Cole Stafford (22:00.10) and freshman Reagan LeMaire (23:49.10) 38th.

The Ragin' Cajuns scored 49 points to finish second behind McNeese State (25) with SLU (92), Grambling (93) and Northwestern State (109) rounding out the five-team field.

Louisiana will return to action on Friday, Oct. 16, when it hosts the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational at Acadiana Park.
