LAKE CHARLES - The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's cross country team earned victories over host McNeese State, LSU and Southeastern Louisiana to claim top honors at the McNeese Cross Country Relay on Friday at the Enos Derbonne Multi-Sports Complex.

The Ragin' Cajuns men's team, ranked No. 14 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Men's South Central Region preseason poll, earned a win in the 8-kilometer event over SLU in the four-team field that served as the season opener. Louisiana dropped a close 9-12 decision to McNeese State, ranked No. 8 in the South Central Region, with LSU earning a 7-15 victory.

On the women's side, Louisiana was paced by the tandem of Courtney Musgrove and freshman Hailey Hesterman, who finished third overall and covered the 6K course in 21:02.4. The team of Anna Devitt and Kelci Lyons placed fourth overall in 21:16.3 with Claire Hodges and Lindsay LaGarde finishing sixth (22:15.3) and Courtney Broussard and Julianna Brooks finishing 13th (23:51.8).

"I was very pleased with the women and men's performances. This was more of a test for fitness for us to determine where we need to take out training," Louisiana head coach Lon Badeaux said. "The women competed very well to win the dual meets, even without the services of two of our top five runners. The men struggled a bit more, but they were also short-handed with two of our top runners nursing minor injuries."

The team of Beau Robinson and Christian Bergeron finished fifth overall, as the duo covered the 8K course in 26:11.7. Jacob Chicola and Bryce Robinson placed seventh overall in the race, finishing in 26:56.0 with Dylan Heck and Trey Bonin finishing ninth (27:17.2) and John-Paul Bergeron and Cole Stafford finishing 13th (23:51.8).

Louisiana will return to action on Friday, Sept. 11, when it travels to Houston to compete in the Rice Invitational.
