Track and Field: Fournette, Vani Punch Ticket to NCAA National Championships

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
Seniors Michael Vani and Albert Fournette each earned a trip to the NCAA D-I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, after Vani registered a pole vault height of 17-5.5 and finishing in a tie for first, and Fournette threw 65-3.5, and finished sixth in the men's shot put, at the NCAA Preliminary Rounds in Jacksonville, Fla.

The duo will now head to the National Championships in Eugene, Oregon from June 11-14 at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon. This is the first trip to the National Tournament for Vani and the second for Fournette, with his first coming in 2012, when he also picked up All-American honors.

Vani finished in a tie with Sam Kendricks of Ole Miss for first place at the prelims, earning a trip with a height of 17-5.5. Vani went the entire meet without missing a jump, matching Kendricks on every jump.

Fournette hit his top mark of 65-3.5 on his third throw, breaking the 60-foot mark on five of his six throws, finishing in sixth place overall.

Also competing in the men's division for the Cajuns was Devin Davis, Micah Thomas, Morgan Cormier, Michael Vani and Dionte Heath. Davis and Thomas finished 27th and 41st in the long jump, respectively, with best jumps of 23-7.5 and 22-7.75 each. Heath finished in 38th in the high jump, reaching a height of 6-6.75 feet, and Cormier finished in 44th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.51.

Tia Mitchell, Tarvia Conway and Lindsey Harmon each competed in the women's division, with Mitchell in the long jump, Conway in the triple jump and Harmon in the high jump. Harmon had the best finish for the Cajuns, coming in 27th with a height of 5-7.75, with Mitchell reaching 19-2.5 and a 38th place finish, and Conway finished in 42nd in the triple jump, reaching 39-5.25.
