MOBILE, Ala. – The Ragin’ Cajuns men’s and women’s track and field squad closes out a three-week stretch of meets here Saturday when they compete in the Jaguar Invitational at Jaguar Track on the University of South Alabama campus.

Saturday’s meet wraps up the first half of the 2013 outdoor slate for the Cajuns who take a break from competition next weekend (April 5-6) before closing out the regular season with meets the final three weekends in April.

“It’s been a great start to our outdoor season so far,” head coach Lon Badeaux mentioned. “We have been training really hard and look for more improvements before we rest up during the spring break.”

Seven teams comprise the field at the Jaguar Invitational, including three Sun Belt schools (UL, South Alabama, Troy). Southern Mississippi and Southeastern Louisiana will also be competing.

Saturday’s action is slated to begin at 10:15 a.m. with the men’s hammer throw, followed by a rolling schedule of the remaining field events.  Running events are scheduled for an 11:30 a.m. start. Jaguar Track is located on the campus of South Alabama next to the Mitchell Center.

Myles Melancon has been the Cajuns lead performer in men’s field events, having claimed shot put titles at the Louisiana Classics and LSU Relays. Melancon is coming off a career-best throw of 17.73m/58-2 at the LSU Relays.

Ta’Shania Bean is the reigning Sun Belt female field athlete of the week. Bean took home the title in women’s triple jump at the LSU Relays with a leap of 12.16m/39-10 ¾, which marked a personal best for the junior from New Orleans. She also shined in the women’s long jump as she was one of only three competitors to reach a distance past 19 feet. Bean was third in the long jump with a distance of 5.81m/19-0 ¾.

Kacey Elphage, who has run the 100 meter hurdles in under 14 seconds twice this season, is set to take the track on Saturday. Elphage’s season-best time of 13.54 leads the Sun Belt Conference performance list. She is the only SBC athlete to finish the event in less than 14 seconds.

North Vermilion High product Morgan Breaux is set to compete in the women’s 100 meter and 200 meter dash. Breaux already has a pair of Top 5 finishes in the 100 meter dash and competes in the 200 meter for the first time this season.

Anna Devitt and Ashley Irwin take part in the women’s long distance events, both competing in the 1,500 meter and 3,000 meter run.

Bean and Tarvia Conway will headline the list of Cajuns competing in the women’s jump events. Lindsey Harmon seeks a third straight Top 5 finish in women’s high jump. Harmon’s Louisiana Classics clearance of 1.78m/5-10 ranks Top 10 on the 2013 NCAA Division I performance list.

Devin Davis is scheduled to take part in men’s high jump and long jump. Davis made his season debut in men’s long jump and fell five inches shy of an event title. Davis’ height of 7.16m/23-6 placed him third right behind first place finisher Phillippe Moore of Southeastern Louisiana (7.29m/23-11).

Justin Jones (100m, 200m) is the Cajuns featured runner in men’s short distances while the freshman trio of Scott Brewster (800m, 1,500m), Matt Rice (800m, 1,500m) and Cole Stafford (1,500m, 3000m) take part in the long distance events.

A recap and link to results from the Jaguar Invitational will be posted on RaginCajuns.com.
