Track and Field: Track Concludes Outdoor Regular Season at Bobcat Classic

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Ragin’ Cajuns men’s and women’s track and field squad closed out the regular season portion of the 2013 outdoor schedule here Saturday participating in the Bobcat Classic hosted by Texas State University.
 
Morgan Breaux (100 meter dash) and Kacey Elphage (100 meter hurdles) turned in season-best times on the track for the women’s squad. Myles Melacon (shot put) matched a season-best performance while Justin Victor (hammer throw) set a season-best in men’s field performances.
 
Anna Devitt grabbed a pair of Top 10 finishes in women’s long distance events and Lindsey Harmon notched another high jump clearance above five feet, seven inches.
 
The Ragin’ Cajuns now turn their attention to the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships set for Friday-Sunday, May 10-12 in Miramar, Fla.
 
Breaux clocked in at 11.66 seconds in the 100 meter dash and finished third out of 34 competitors. The North Vermilion High product eclipsed her previous best time of 11.67 seconds at South Alabama’s Jaguar Invitational and posted her fifth Top 5 showing in the event this season.
 
Elphage continued to shine in the 100 meter hurdles as her time of 13.31 seconds easily bested her previous best of 13.46 seconds at last week’s LSU Alumni Gold. Elphage ran the 100 meter hurdles in less than 14 seconds for the fifth time this season and timed in under 13.50 seconds a second straight week.
 
Devitt placed seventh in the 1,500 meter run at 4:43.99 and fourth in the 5,000 meter run 17:23.89. The 5,000 meter time was her fastest of 2013, beating out 17:34.66 at the LSU Relays in March.
 
Harmon notched her best high jump mark in the March 30 Jaguar Invitational at South Alabama with a clearance of 1.71m/5-7 ¼. It was the Lafayette native’s fourth height of at least five feet, seven inches in her inaugural collegiate campaign.
 
Tia Mitchell placed first in women’s long jump for the second time this season (McNeese Springtime Classic) reached her season-best distance at 5.93m/19-5 ½. It was a significant improvement over her 5.32m/17-5 ½ at last week’s Southeastern Invitational.
 
Melancon turned in a strong performance in his final shot put toss before the SBC Championships. Melancon matched his season-best toss of 17.73m/58-2 and was the top Division I athlete out of 20 competitors.
 
Victor continued his steady improvement in men’s hammer throw with a toss of 60.73m/199-3. His finished a foot further than his previous best toss of 60.37m/198-1 set at last week’s LSU Alumni Gold.
 
On the track, Justin Jones paced the Cajuns’ men’s contingent with a Top 10 finish in the 100 meter dash (10.59) and Top 15 finish in the 200 meter dash (21.59).
 
Corbett Ourso landed the squad’s lone Top 10 finish in the long distance events with a time of 15.51.11 in the 5,000 meter run placing him ninth. Running the event for only the third time this season, Ourso beat out his previous top time of 15.54.63 set at the LSU Relays (March 23) and made significant improvement over his time of 16:13.81 at McNeese back on April 13.
 
Morgan Cormier ran hurdles for the Cajuns men and netted a pair of Top 10 finishes. His time of 53.56 seconds in the 400 meter hurdles marked his season best and continued gradual improvement over the last month (59.50 at South Alabama, 56.46 at McNeese, 54.05 at Southeastern Louisiana).
 
The Ragin’ Cajuns have two full weeks to rest and prepare for the Sun Belt Championships. The start of the championships, on Friday, May 10, is the next time that Louisiana is scheduled to compete.
