Cross Country: Short-Handed Cajuns Battle At Texas A&M Invitational

Comments

COLLEGE STATION, Texas Beau Robinson paced the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's cross country team with a 42nd-place finish while Courtney Musgrove led the women's team with a 45th-place finish on Saturday at the Texas A&M Invitational at the Dale Watts Cross Country Course.

Competing without top runners Matt Rice, Anna Devitt and Ashley Irwin, Louisiana finished 13th overall in the men's 8,000-meter race and was 16th in the women's 6,000-meter event.

"Unfortunately, those things happen and I'm not overly concerned about how well the girls will eventually do when we have AK (Anna Devitt) and Ashley back," head coach Lon Badeaux said. "The guys actually didn't do that bad considering we are still without Matt Rice, who we expect to be back soon.

"Overall, it was frustrating, but it's better to get the bad races out of the way earlier than later when it really counts."

Texas, ranked second in the South Central Region in both the men's and women's polls, swept the event claiming the men's race with 37 points and 87 points in the women's.

North Texas (72), Missouri (106), Texas A&M (116) and Stephen F. Austin (126) rounded out the top five in the men's race with Louisiana (397) finishing ahead of TCU (413), Abilene Christian (422) and UT Rio Grande Valley (438).

Missouri (92) followed Texas in the women's race with ACU (107), Texas A&M (119) and SFA (135) rounding out the top five.

Robinson posted a time of 24:46.2 to lead Louisiana in the men's race with Christian Bergeron (25:58.6), Trey Bonin (26:08.3), Bryce Robinson (26:23.1), Sean Bezdek (26:58.1) and Jacob Chicola (27:07.8) following.

Musgrove continued her solid start to the 2015 season after her time of 21:52.9 carried the Ragin' Cajuns on the day. Claire Hodges (22:39.6), Kelci Lyons (23:29.1), Hailey Hesterman (23:40.1), Lindsay LeGarde (23:47.3) and Danielle Castaldi (24:09.8) joined Musgrove in the event that saw nine of the top 15 teams in the South Central Region entered in the event.

Louisiana will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 3, when it heads to Lake Charles to compete in the McNeese State Cowboy Stampede.
