Track and Field: Cajuns Wrap Up Regular-Season At Leon Johnson Invitational

NATCHITOCHES The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track and field team recorded seven first-place finishes and turned in several solid performances on Saturday as it wrapped up its regular-season at the NSU Leon Johnson Invitational at the Walter P. Ledet Track Complex.

The meet was the final tuneup for the Ragin' Cajuns before competing in the 2015 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, scheduled for May 8-10 at Jaguar Track in Mobile, Ala.

Danielle Castaldi (800-meters), Claire Hodges (1,500-meters), Anna Katherine Devitt (5,000-meters) and Madalyn Trisler (high jump) each claimed first-place honors for the women's team with Beau Robinson (5,000-meters), Dionte Heath (high jump) and Justin Victor (hammer throw) claiming top honors on the men's side.

Castaldi clocked a time of 2:16.76 to claim the 800-meters with Kaylei Esfeller finishing third (2:21.93) and Lindsey LaGarde fifth (2:23.95). Hodges, who led Louisiana to a 1-2 finish in the 1,500-meters, posted a top time of 4:46.37 with Courtney Musgrove finishing second overall (4:55.19).

Louisiana claimed the top four spots in the 5,000-meters with Devitt recording a time of 18:20.54 followed by Ashley Irwin (18:24.17), Musgrove (18:59.14) and Hodges (19:36.98). Freshman Alena Hrusoci finished second overall in the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.11) with teammate Joya Tardieff placing fifth (1:02.86).

Trisler earned Louisiana's lone first-place finish in women's field events after she cleared the bar at 5-9 to claim the high jump. Meredith Driskell was one of three Cajuns to place in the top four in the pole vault after clearing the bar at 12-3 , with twin sisters Amanda Gale (11-3 ) and Emily Gale each finishing fourth (11-3 ).

In the long jump, Tia Mitchell finished fourth overall at 19-8 , while Jana Jones (46-7 ) was one of two Cajuns to finish in the top four in the shot put with Tamela Young placing fourth (45-0 ).

Jones added a fourth-place performance in the hammer throw (164-6), with Amie Leitko finishing third in the discus (143-6), and Amber Sharp (126-4) and Chelcie Sonnier (125-0) finishing fifth and sixth, respectively, in the javelin.

Robinson clocked a winning time of 15:39.07 to lead Louisiana to a 1-2-3 finish in the 5,000-meter run. Sean Bezdek (16:19.99) and Jacob Chicola (16:23.33) finished behind Robinson in the event with Logan LaGarde finishing third in the 800-meter run (1:56.62) and Christian Bergeron placing fourth in the 1,500-meter run (4:03.07).

In the 110-meter hurdles, freshman Tyler Hughes earned a second-place finish (14.77) with Morgan Cormier finishing sixth (15.32). Cormier added a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (52.78) with Austin Ley finishing sixth (55.15).

Heath claimed the high jump for the Ragin' Cajuns, clearing the bar at 6-9 . Teammate William LeBlanc placed third overall for Louisiana (6-6), with Josh McDaniel, Caleb Wisecarver and Nicholas Laurent finishing in a third-place tie in the pole vault (15-0 ).

Victor claimed the title in the hammer throw after posting a throw of 217-10 while finishing third in the shot put (51-1). Landon Carroll finished third in the hammer throw for the Ragin' Cajuns (164-6) with Kenneth Nassar placing fifth overall in the shot put (50-0).

In the triple jump, Ricky Theyard earned a third-place finish (49-2 ) with Cody Nickel finishing third in the javelin (194-7), followed by Bartul Basic in fourth (194-3) and Josh Cecil in sixth (177-3).
