Track and Field: Ragin' Cajuns Ready To Contend At Sun Belt Outdoor Championships

GULF SHORES, Ala. The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track and field team looks to contend for the Sun Belt Conference title when it begins competition on Friday at the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium.

Action begins at 10 a.m. on Friday with the decathlon followed by the start of the heptathlon at 10:30. The meet will conclude on Sunday. Live results will be available on RaginCajuns.com.

Louisiana, which finished seventh in both the men's and women's events at last year's meet in San Marcos, Texas, returns a pair of conference champions in Tia Mitchell (women's long jump) and Joya Tardieff (400-meter hurdles).

"Except for a couple of little injuries, everyone is feeling good and we ready to get this meet started," head coach Lon Badeaux said. "Our kids have trained very hard this spring and I feel like we have a good chance to be very competitive this weekend."

Stacy Imagbe (20-6 ) and Mitchell (20-1) have posted the top two marks in the long jump among Sun Belt Conference athletes this spring with Kelci Lyons (2:09.57, 800-meters), freshman Alena Hrusoci (1:00.08, 400-meter hurdles) and Madalyn Trisler (5-9 ) high jump) all ranked second in the their respective events.

A pair of Cajuns Meredith Driskell (12-8 , pole vault) and Amber Sharp (136-6, javelin) are ranked third overall in the league with Alex Harrell (5-7 ) ranked fourth in the high jump and Chelcie Sonnier (136-1) fourth in the javelin.

Jasmin Fusilier turned in the top point total in the heptathlon this season among SBC athletes, scoring 4,867 points at the South Alabama Invitational with Harrell posting the sixth-best total (3,717).

Justin Victor, who will compete in three events for the Ragin' Cajuns, is ranked second overall in the hammer throw (219-8).

Newcomers William LeBlanc (6-11, high jump) and Bartul Basic (204-8, javelin) each turned in solid springs for the Ragin' Cajuns men's team, ranking second overall among SBC athletes in their respective events. Another newcomer, Hanoj Carter, is ranked third overall in the 200-meter dash (20.92) and fourth in the 100-meters (school-record 10.20).

Three members of the men's team have posted marks that are the third-best in the Sun Belt Conference this spring highlighted by Morgan Cormier (14.42, 110-meter hurdles), Dionte Heath (6-9 , high jump) and Cody Nickel (203-2, javelin).

In the triple jump, Ricky Theyard posted the fourth-best mark (49-11 ) in the Sun Belt Conference with Devin Davis recording the fifth-best mark in the long jump (24-5 ).
