Track and Field: Fusilier Claims Early Lead In Heptathlon; Cajuns Complete First Day At SBC Outdoor

GULF SHORES, Ala. Jasmin Fusilier took the lead after the first four events in the women's heptathlon and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track and field team worked its way to a second-place showing in men's competition after the first day of the 2015 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium.

Action resumes on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the final events in the men's decathlon followed by the conclusion of the women's heptathlon at 9:30. Field events will start at 2 p.m. with running events set to begin at 5 p.m.

Louisiana scored 19 points in three men's events to finish behind first-day leader South Alabama, which scored 40 points. Defending champion UT Arlington was third with 17 points followed by Arkansas State (14) and ULM (13).

The Ragin' Cajuns were in a fourth-place tie on the women's side after scoring 18 points in four events. South Alabama claimed the first-day lead with 34 points, followed by Arkansas State (25), Appalachian State (22), Texas State (18) and Louisiana.

Bolstered by first-place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles (14.39), the 200-meters (25.29) and a tie for first in the high jump (5-5 ), Fusilier scored 3,152 points to claim the lead in the seven-event competition with teammate Alexandra Harrell in third place after scoring 2,977 points.

Louisiana posted a pair of all-conference performances on the men's side as Justin Victor finished second in the hammer throw (218-4) and Cody Nickel placed third overall in the javelin (206-4). Freshman Bartul Basic followed Nickel in the javelin with a fourth-place throw of 202-2 while Josh Cecil was ninth at 184-6.

Senior Amber Sharp recorded throw of 134-3 to finish fourth overall in the women's javelin with teammates Chelcie Sonnier placing fifth (133-3) and Madison Meche ninth (126-6). Meredith Driskell earned a fifth-place finish in the pole vault for Louisiana after clearing the bar at 12-2 while the twin tandem of Emily Gale and Amanda Gale finished in an eighth-place tie at 11-9.

In the women's 10,000-meter run, Ashley Irwin set a new school record for Louisiana after she finished fifth overall with a time of 36:36.11.
