Track and Field: Cajuns Finish Fifth, Sixth At SBC Outdoor Championships

GULF SHORES, Ala. Newcomer Hanoj Carter claimed the first men's 200-meter dash title for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track and field team since 1994 as he posted a time of 20.66 seconds as the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships concluded Sunday at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium.

Louisiana finished the three-day event in fifth place in women's competition scoring 87 points with the men's team posting 74.5 points to finish sixth.

Arkansas State claimed the women's title with 138 points followed by Georgia State (129), Texas State (129), UT Arlington (90) and Louisiana (87). South Alabama (76), Appalachian State (68.5), Troy (46), ULM (40) and Georgia Southern (14.5) rounded out the field.

Defending champion UTA claimed the men's title after scoring 166 points with Arkansas State (148), Texas State (126), South Alabama (121.5), ULM (92) and Louisiana (74.5) following. Appalachian State (52), UALR (20) and Troy (11) rounded out the men's field.

Carter posted the fastest time in the Sun Belt Conference this season and became the first Ragin' Cajun since Grady Labbe in 1994 to claim the men's 200 title. The Shreveport native, who entered the event ranked No. 3 in the Sun Belt, finished ahead of the league's top two runners Arkansas State's Jaylen Bacon (20.71) and UT Arlington's Clayton Vaughn (20.74) to win his first individual title as a Ragin' Cajun.

Carter added a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter dash to his resume after posting a time of 10.33 with Jeryl Brazil finishing eighth overall at 10.61. Three Cajuns earned finishes in the 110-meter hurdles with freshman Tyler Hughes finishing fifth (14.67), Morgan Cormier placing sixth (14.75) and Arthur Price finishing eighth (14.95). Cormier added a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles after posting a time of 53.27.

Louisiana had two athletes finish in the top four in the high jump as William LeBlanc earning All-Sun Belt Conference honors with a second-place finish (6-9) followed by Dionte Heath who placed fourth (6-9). Ricky Theyard finished fourth overall in the triple jump (48-11 ) while Josh McDaniel finished sixth overall in the pole vault after clearing the bar at 15-8 .

Heptathlon winner Jasmin Fusilier, who also added a fifth-place finish in the long jump on Saturday, earned a pair of fifth-place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles (14.25) and the triple jump (40-0 ).

Freshman Alena Hrusoci earned a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (1:03.47) with Taylor Walker earning a seventh-place finish in the triple jump (39-1 ).

Kelci Lyons earned a third-place finish in the women's 800-meters, posting a time of 2:09.92, with teammate Danielle Castaldi finishing eighth overall in 2:22.35. The women's 4x100-meter relay team recorded a fifth-place finish with a time of 46.41 while the 4x400-meter relay team finished sixth after crossing the finish line in 3:48.56

Louisiana will return to action when it competes in the NCAA East Preliminary that is scheduled for May 28-30 in Jacksonville, Fla.
